More bathroom progress

It may be slow, but it is moving and I'm fine with that. We do have a fully functioning bathroom in the basement and still a half-bath upstairs (although I would like to rip out the vanity and toilet really soon now).

So, while I was on a little holiday through the vineyards of BC, Yvon got a quote for installation of a new window. This is our old window. It's the only upstairs window original to the house, it doesn't really open and definitely doesn't open in the winter when it freezes up.

(This is two-week old picture)

The quote: $450 if we provide a custom-sized window to fit the existing hole, or $750 if they had to do any framing.

One of Yvon's colleagues said I was crazy to try it, but everything I read showed that it wasn't that hard to install a window. And generally nothing I do earns $450-$750 in a day so it was worth a try.

So it was a really profitable day, I guess.

Of course there was extra framing to do because you can't buy the same sizes as you could in 1969. We still have exterior trimming to do, but not today. It's currently sealed and under a 2 foot overhang, so it'll be alright until next week.

For the first time in 10 years, we have a window that opens in the bathroom. Nice!

There is nothing like having a window that opens in the bathroom :)

You should be very proud of yourself! :)

Everyone who told you that you were crazy to do it yourself were being silly.  There's nothing special to installing a window, and with planning and foresight, small ones like this can be done lickety-split.

Especially since you had an existing opening already.

By the by, do you need good high-quality lino flooring for the bathroom floor?  When you come by our place this evening you can look at the remainders we have from our two re-floored bathrooms.

Awesome job Ev!! You can do anything you put your mind to... and since we're talking about windows, have you ever replaced your livingroom window?

Rodger installed new windows in our kitchen and the kids' bedrooms last year... we saved a bundle and they look great!

Well, now maybe I'll let Dan and his dad or a friend install the windows in our house when the time comes...

Garth: Thanks for the offer. I'll still measure our basement bathroom.

Bon: No, we still have the same icky living room window, but maybe there will be a "before and after" soon on that front.

Teddy: Of couse Dan can install windows. Save yourself a bundle and it'll make Dan feel all manly and handiman-ish. That's how I feel right now. :-)

woohooo.... aren't renos fun? We've been renovating our 1968 bungalow since we moved in 24 years ago.... I think I recognize this bathroom! we eventually took 32 inches away from the middle room by knocking out the right hand wall... and put in a bathtub along that wall.....and a separate shower on the left side ... just left of the window..and... two years ago...we totally redid the second reno on the room all by ourselves..including doing a dry pack shower base. WE tore out the old one when we realized there was rot under the tiles placed by our contractor years ago.. the reason we decided to begin doing our own renos....

It took us 2 full years to do the bathroom...but, we did it all and are darn proud of it...

I meant to add... my husband always says... "how hard can it be"? we just read a lot and even buy some tutorials on some things...and voila... give it a try....
